Titanic - 100 Years Strong
Today marks 100 years for the sinking of the Titanic.
On April 10th, 1912 the Titanic set sail from Southampton, England to New York City. This White Star Liner known as The Unsinkable met her defeat just four days post her voyage.
The beautiful creation held 2,224 passengers and crew members yet it was only equipped with 16 lifeboats. Lifeboats that would hold only 1,708 people (if there were to be any problems where aborting the ship were to take place).
On April 14, 1912 at 11:40pm, the Titanic struck an iceberg. The collision ripped a 300 foot long hole in the ship.
Within the next 45 minutes the first lifeboat was launched and by the time the last boat launched there were still more than 1,500 passengers left on the sinking ship. Come the next morning, on April 15, 1912, the once unsinkable ship sank.
There were only 710 survivors.
